13C NMR spectral data and molecular descriptors to predict the antioxidant activity of flavonoids BJPS
Scotti,Luciana; Fernandes,Mariane Balerine; Muramatsu,Eric; Emereciano,Vicente de Paula; Tavares,Josean Fechine; Silva,Marcelo Sobral da; Scotti,Marcus Tullius.
Tissue damage due to oxidative stress is directly linked to development of many, if not all, human morbidity factors and chronic diseases. In this context, the search for dietary natural occurring molecules with antioxidant activity, such as flavonoids, has become essential. In this study, we investigated a set of 41 flavonoids (23 flavones and 18 flavonols) analyzing their structures and biological antioxidant activity. The experimental data were submitted to a QSAR (quantitative structure-activity relationships) study. NMR 13C data were used to perform a Kohonen self-organizing map study, analyzing the weight that each carbon has in the activity. Additionally, we performed MLR (multilinear regression) using GA (genetic algorithms) and molecular...

15N-labeled nitrogen from green manure and ammonium sulfate utilization by the sugarcane ratoon Scientia Agricola
Ambrosano,Edmilson José; Trivelin,Paulo Cesar Ocheuze; Cantarella,Heitor; Ambrosano,Gláucia Maria Bovi; Schammass,Eliana Aparecida; Muraoka,Takashi; Rossi,Fabrício.
Legumes as green manure are alternative sources of nitrogen (N) for crops and can supplement or even replace mineral nitrogen fertilization due to their potential for biological nitrogen fixation (BNF). The utilization of nitrogen by sugarcane (Saccharum spp.) fertilized with sunn hemp (Crotalaria juncea L.) and ammonium sulfate (AS) was evaluated using the 15N tracer technique. N was added at the rate of 196 and 70 kg ha-1 as 15Nlabeled sunn hemp green manure (SH) and as ammonium sulfate (AS), respectively. Treatments were: (i) Control; (ii) AS15N; (iii) SH15N + AS; (iv) SH15N; and (v) AS15N + SH. Sugarcane was cultivated for five years and was harvested three times. 15N recovery was evaluated in the two first harvests. In the sum of the three harvests,...

17 years of integrated research, monitoring, and management of HWA and hemlock ecosystems at Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area Nature Precedings
Richard Evans.
Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area (“the park”) covers 28,000 ha along the Delaware River in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Eastern hemlock forests cover 2,200 ha (8%) of the park, and are often associated with trout streams and scenic waterfalls. Activities like trout fishing, bird watching, and hiking are concentrated in hemlock forests, and many of these areas are officially designated as “Outstanding Natural Features” having “high intrinsic or unique values.” In 1989 hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA) was detected in the park, and since 1993 the park has conducted a program to address the threats that hemlock woolly adelgid and hemlock decline poses to park resources. This program...

1-MCP em Mangabas armazenadas em temperatura ambiente e a 11ºC Rev. Bras. Frutic.
Campos,Raquel Pires; Knoch,Beatriz; Hiane,Priscila Aiko; Ramos,Maria Isabel Lima; Ramos Filho,Manoel Mendes.
A mangaba, fruto nativo altamente perecível, apresenta reduzida vida útil pós-colheita.

2010 Annual Report of the Southwestern Minnesota Farm Business Management Association AgEcon
Nordquist, Dale W.; Kurtz, James N.; Nitchie, Donald L.; Paulson, Garen J.; Froslan, Janet M.; Woodford, John L..
Average net farm income was $322,165 in 2010 for the 97 farms included in this annual report of the Southwestern Minnesota Farm Business Management Association. Average earnings increased by 362% from $69,787 in 2009 (Figure 1). Inflations adjusted profits rebounded after a downturn in 2009 that was caused primarily by low profits in the livestock sectors. Strong yields, substantially higher crop inventory values, and rebounding profitability of the livestock sectors led the way to much higher profits in 2010. Highlights of association financial results for 2010: Entire report is available at: http://www.cffm.umn.edu/Publications/Pubs/FBMA/SW_MN_FBMA_2010.pdf• Median net farm income, or the income earned by the middle farm, was $234,879,...

2010 Michigan Cash Grain Farm Business Analysis Summary AgEcon
Wittenberg, Eric; Harsh, Stephen B..
This report summarizes the 2010 financial and production records of 99 Michigan cash grain farms. To be included, the farms must have produced at least 50 percent of gross cash farm income from one or a combination of these items: corn, soybeans, wheat, navy beans, oats, sugar beets and other small grains. The records came from Michigan State University’s TelFarm project and Farm Credit Service of Michigan. The values were pooled into averages for reporting purposes. Farm records were included if a farm financial analysis had completed 2010 data including beginning and ending balance sheets and a statement of income and expenses. The data was checked to verify that cash discrepancy was less than 10% of gross cash inflow and that debt discrepancy was less...

Wittenberg, Eric; Wolf, Christopher A..
This report summarizes the financial and production records of 90 dairy farms from throughout Michigan in 2010. To be included, the farms must have produced at least 50 percent of gross cash farm income from milk and dairy animal sales. The records came from Michigan State University’s TelFarm project and the Farm Credit Service system in Michigan. The values were pooled into averages for reporting purposes. The average herd included here is larger than would be the average dairy herd in Michigan. Average values are reported in the summary tables and discussion that follows but one should be aware that considerable variation across herds exists in virtually every measure.
